Hodgkin's disease is a type of cancer called lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system. Hodgkin's has a long and rich history. The disease takes the name of Thomas Hodgkin, an English scholar and Quaker physician working at Guy's Hospital in England. Hodgkin's disease, sometimes called Hodgkin's lymphoma a cancer that starts in lymphoid tissue. It is called after the British doctor Thomas Hodgkin who first described the disease in 1832 and took note several features that distinguish it from other lymphomas. Hodgkin lymphoma is characterized clinically by the orderly spread of disease from one group of lymph nodes to another and the development of systemic symptoms with advanced disease. Histologically, the disease is characterized by the presence of Reed-Sternberg cells. In the U.S., approximately 1,700 children and adolescents under age 20 are diagnosed with lymphoma each year. Hodgkin's disease increases the tissue node, which can cause pressure on important structures. It can spread through the lymph vessels to other lymph nodes. In sickness Hodgkin's cells in the lymphatic system become abnormal. They divide too rapidly and without control or order. Because lymphatic tissue is present in many parts of the body, Hodgkin's disease can start almost anywhere.

Hodgkin lymphoma was one of the first cancers to be rendered curable with combination chemotherapy. Lymph nodes are oval, pea-sized organs. They are under the skin along the path of the great vessels, and grouped in areas like the neck, armpits, groin, abdomen (trunk), and pelvis (hip). Hodgkin's disease can occur in a single lymph node, group of lymph nodes, or, sometimes, other parts of the lymphatic system, such as bone marrow and spleen. This cancer tends to spread in a way fairly orderly one group of lymph nodes in the next group. Because lymphatic tissue is present in many parts of the body, Hodgkin's disease may begin almost anywhere, but most often starts in lymph nodes in the upper body. The most common sites are in the chest, neck or armpits. It is one of two common types of cancer of the lymphatic system. Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, the other is much more common. In the United States in 2004, there were about of 7,880 new cases of Hodgkin's disease, compared with 54,320 new cases of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.Hodgkin 's disease is rare in children under 5 years of age. In children under 10 years of age, is more common in boys than in girls.

Causes of Hodgkin's disease

Common causes and risk factor for Hodgkin's disease include the following:

• The exact cause of Hodgkin lymphoma is unknown.
• People who have had the Epstein-Barr virus, which can cause infectious mononucleosis (mono), may have a slightly increased risk of lymphoma.
• Many factors such as age and genetics – are probably beyond our control.
• Environmental or lifestyle-related variables.
• Family of patients who develop the disease.
• It is more common in men than in women.

Symptoms of Hodgkin's disease

Some signs and symptoms related to Hodgkin's disease are:

• Fever and chills.
• Night sweats.
• Painless swelling of lymph nodes in the neck, armpits or groin.
• Children with Hodgkin's disease sometimes think they have the flu. They may have fever, feel achy or swollen glands, which look and feel like bumps, often on the neck or groin.
• Itching in the trunk.
• Unusual back or abdominal pain.
• Fatigue.
• Unexplained weight loss.
• Mistake encouragement.

Treatment of Hodgkin's disease

Here is the list of methods for the treatment of disease Hodgkin:

• When the disease is confined to a limited area, radiation therapy is the treatment of choice.
• Transplantation mother cell to treatment with high dose chemotherapy.
• -Biological therapies using naturally occurring substances the immune system to halt the progression of lymphoma.
• Bone marrow transplant.
• For patients with clinical stage IA disease that is not bulky and mediastinum with NS histology, mantle irradiation alone may be adequate therapy.
• The combined modality therapy, which is 4-6 cycles of chemotherapy followed by involved field radiotherapy, is used.
• The most widely used regimen is called ABVD and consists of four chemotherapy agents. These drugs are administered intravenously (into a vein) every 14 days, often up to 12 times.
